Canals did it for Stort Valley - 02 August 2010
On Sunday 1st August a group of anglers from Stort Valley AS took to the Grand Union Canal for the latest LAA (London Anglers Association) Canal Benevolent. The team of Steve Beehan, Bill Beehan, Steve Turnbull and Danny Cruse tried to gain honours for the club while Bob Groom, Malcolm Gregg and Nick Jones tried out for individual honours.

With the match fished in four section apart, each team member was required to place in their section to gain points. Steve Beeehan and Steve Turnbull both struggled on their sections finishing mid table, while Danny managed a little better finishing just outside the top three. Bill managed a very respectable third place on his section with over 8lb of fish. This gave the team a total of 36 points and finishing in fourth spot overall.

On the individual side Bob finished a respectable fifth place on his section while Malcolm and Nick both fishing the same section finished at the other end of the scales. Malcolm weight in nearly 2lb to finish about tenth while Nick whom managed to land a Bream of around 3lb to weigh in 3lb 14oz and take fourth spot in his section.

Danny does it again! - 25 July 2010
With the weather starting overcast and a few short sharp showers, the fish seemed to show early on. Danny Cruse catching almost from the off before losing a good fish. Fish continue through the first 4 hours before it went a little quiet for a short spell.

It seemed to be a pond of two halves with the Church bank pegs all catching steadily while only a few pegs produced on the road side.

Danny ended up with an amazing mixed bag totaling 25lbs 1oz of Cruican Carp, bream and roach. Tony Henson finished a very respectable second with a bag main of bream totalling 16lbs 5oz. Derek Dampney finished third with 15lbs 4oz including a nice common carp.

A Total of 17 anglers caught 135lbs 5oz for a pond mostly reknown for no fish.

A Cruse for Danny on the Thames - 19 July 2010
17 members and one guest, always a pleasure to have Mick Burrell with us, attended a much anticipated trip to the River Thames. Unfortunately not only were conditions against us but lack of maintenance meant it was difficult for the late walk offs to find swims.

Fortunes were mixed on the day with the weights going from pretty good through disappointing to downright dismal. Danny Cruse whom walked the who length of the stretch before walking back had a late start but made the right choice of swim with a winning weight of 16lb 3oz most of bleak, dace and roach.
Mick Westby came a close second with 15lb 12oz even after breaking his 4th section of pole and turning to his 8m whip. Mick Burrell was 3rd with 13lb 5oz. Shaun Dodson took junior spot with a difficult 2oz.

Groom breaming...carp leaping...coaching wheeling! - 14 June 2010
Well following Stort Valleys latest outing to the commerical water of Dents Farm it turned out to be a more memorable day than expected.

With the outing seeing approx 27 anglers fishing the venue it was expected to be a tight run match. Bob Groom managed a low draw and was able to select a peg called the point. Although Bobs swim is reknown for carp, it was bream that stole the day for Bob managing 27 bream totalling approx 44lbs. Bob had caught steadily throughout the day on sweetcorn and had managed a few skimmers and tench ontop of the bream. So when it came to weighing in, the scales tipped 53 plus pounds. Now we all believe that a 50lb per keep net rule had been displayed on the fishery rules that morning, but was Bob to be disqualified? No. . .(was this captain Heywood being kind or Secretaries privilage? . . . who will know!)

A further amusing hi-lite of the day was the news that Mick Westby whom had gone to catch the big carp and managed to hook 11 fish but to Micks disappointment (but everyones enjoyment!), he had only managed to land one carp. Now that’s bad enough but (sorry for laughing Mick) that decide that it didn't want to be the only fish in the net and decided to take a leap of faith and manaed to jump out the keepnet! (That’s what you get for feeding carp trout pellets!)
With Bob winning the day, everyone was settling in to a relaxing journey back home when about a mile down the road . . . Bump . . . coach stopping . . .

Mick Westby inspecting the damage or looking for his carp?

. . .yes the wheel had come off the coach. The driver managed to stop the coach safely (thanks Paul), but the rear wheel had come unbolted and had bounced down the road and into the farmers field. The second wheel was hanging on by about an inch, well with a long wait expected, and Gordon and Alan in a near by Caravan site, transported was quickly arranged for a trip to the nearest pub.

Cheers…from left to right..Malcolm Gregg, Mick Westby, Brian Walker, Bob Groom, Steve Turnbull, Andy Turnbull, Tony Henson, Kev Shaw and Alan Heywood.

After several hours and a few bowls of chips (well not for the Beehans anyway but that's another story) Several of the members were a little bit worse for the wear upon returning to a newly fixed coach. With a now slow drive home (wheel still missing a few nuts . . argh!), then the urg to pee became to great and a stop on the hard shoulder was required for several of the drinkers!

So from a 5am leave it turned into a 10pm return…lets hope the next coach outing is a little shorter.
